As of 26 March, Thai Smile has started flights from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport to Kota Kinabalu airport in Borneo, Malaysia. This is the airline’s second route to Malaysia after Penang, with its parent company Thai Airways also operating to Kuala Lumpur. The route is serviced by A320 aircraft and the flight time is approximately 3 hours 20 minutes.
Their schedule is as follows:
Please keep in mind that though Thai Smile has Thai Airways as a parent company, Thai Smile is not part of Star Alliance. Similar to Silk Air and Singapore Airlines, you will not get Star Alliance Gold (or Silver) benefits on Thai Smile if you have status with an airline other than Thai Airways.
I am surprised to see Thai Smile start this route. I am not sure how much interest there is within Thai tourists for visiting Kota Kinabalu, but I am glad to see Thai Smile start something unique. Can you see yourself taking this route?
